A majority of the wood I use is milled
right here on site. I have contacts with several tree services
who keep me in mind rather than taking usable wood to the
landfill. Most trees are dead or dying trees, also trees felled
by storms. It's a great feeling to give them a new life.
Years of experience:
+30 years of woodworking experience
Where did you learn your
skills?
My first
introduction to wood working was at age 8 by
my grandfather. I remember making simple
toys from scrap wood. My first real shop
experience was taking wood shop for the
first time, I was in 7th grade. I continued
in 8th and through my high school years.
Many years later I began teaching, I taught
a number of classes at a local Woodcraft
store.
Where do you get your
inspiration from?
My work over the
last few years is mainly inspired by nature
and the wood itself.
What Furniture styles/periods do you work in?
My main focus is contemporary furniture with
Asian influences. I'm also very involved
with live edge work or George Nakashima
inspired pieces.
What differentiates your work?
I work in a small studio and my tools of
choice are hand tools, most of which are
Japanese. I gave up the stationary and power
tools years ago. I'll still use a router
here and there but for the most part every
piece I build is done so by use of Japanese
hand tools. All surfaces have been planed to
final finish not sanded.
